The story of Rachel and Jay

I have started to notice that Reef keeping is like a drug, I keep thinking about bigger and better, but today I learned a lesion that I thought I would share with every one. Please note the names have been changed to protect the fishes. Well Jay got a 200+ gallon aquarium set up for Christmas from his wife Rachel; the whole thing is quite impressive. The stand was one of the nicest I have ever seen. Well now the tank, canopy, and stand sat in the garage for a few months due to some problems with the tank. Finley after many phone calls it was fixed and ready to be moved in to the house, to its final resting spot. So Jay asks members of his club if they would mind helping out. I being a member, and wanting to watch some one else set up there tank before I do mine, jump at the chance.

So D-day has come, I along with several other members of the club, Jay and his Wife, all get ready there is a lot of discussion in the garage about how we are going to get it done. Now after jokes and other B.S.ing doors are taken off there hinges and the fun is about to start.  Backs strain, and the tank is lifted off the stand and placed on furniture dollies, much relief is taken as the tank is much heavier than it looks. Now it is time for the stand to be moved in to its place. The stand I am happy to report even though it looked like it would be heavier than the tank, it was in fact quite easy for to people to carry. Now like I said the fun was about to start.

The fun took the form of the stand at first it was decided that it would come in the house from the garage door way, then some one broke out a tape and found out that well the trim on the stand was in no way going to fit in the door way so, that left the front door. The front door was taken off it’s hinges, the tank stand is placed on a dolly, and rolled around to the front door where it gets a bit wet from the rain but it is no big deal, as soon as we start to pull it in the door we see that there will be no room to corner the stand so we are going to have to send it up one wall to get it in the door, and take it in on it’s side.
This was no big deal since the stand was light so up the stand went, and the dolly came under as every one was trying to set the stand down on the dolly the light in the entry way reach out and took a hold of the stand as if to say, “hey your gonna have problems if you bring it past here.” Well with the loss of one light bulb the fixture let’s go of the stand which is promptly places on the dolly.  Well the stand was rolled to the door way to its final resting place. The even more fun is about to come our way, the stand sitting on the dolly is too big to fit in to the door way so the stand is picked up and placed on the blanket and then pushed back to the door way. The trim grabs on to the doorway and is not going to let it in so the stand is backed out, the dolly comes and the stand is placed on its bottom on the dolly. Once again it is push to the door way but you guessed it will not fit that way. So once again the tape measure is brought out and many jokes are made about cutting the trim off and putting it back on later. What was decided? How will we ever get the stand in to the room it was wanted in? Well as a joke or at least I think it started off as a joke some one said well if we cut out the door way it would fit.

After a few loving verbal jabs back and forth between Jay and Rachel, which consisted of well you picked out the stand, and you said you measure and it would fit. She said well I never really liked the door way any way, this is the point where the saw was brought out, and the door way was cut. Jay did such a job that only two small sections were cut out (and should be easy to replace) and the stand fit with ease.
I have learned much today thanks to Jay and Rachel, and I know that when I do get ready to buy a bigger tank, I am going to remember the old adage of measure twice, and cut once but I think I will be replacing cut once with buy once. Then again that set up is so nice looking I would no only cut out part of a wall I would take the whole wall out to get it in. So really I guess the lesson of this story is join a club, your fellow members will be willing to help you out in any way they can. Even if it is removing a wall to help you get your tank stand in your home.

Well, (Rachel) likes the story. I think you need to post this story in DFWMAS news letter.
